PRJ2000: Microsoft Project Quits Unexpectedly When You Run the Registration Wizard (310446)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to register Microsoft Project 2000 by running the Registration Wizard, you may see the following symptoms:
  • The program may unexpectedly quit when you attempt to confirm the registration number.
  • You may receive the following error message:
    The Registration Wizard cannot run because the system information it requires is either unavailable or incorrect.

CAUSE

This issue can occur when both of the following conditions are true:
  • Microsoft Project is installed on a computer running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft Windows 2000.

    -and-
  • You attempt to register Microsoft Project while you are logged on as a user without administrative permissions.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.

    NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  2. In the What do you want the computer to do box, click Log off user, and then click OK.
  3. Log on as a user with administrative permissions.
  4. Start Microsoft Project 2000. When you are prompted for registration, click Yes.
  5. Follow the steps onscreen to register Microsoft Project.
  6. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
  7. In the What do you want the computer to do box, point to the arrow, click Log off user, and then click OK.
  8. Log on with your user account.
  9. Start Microsoft Project.
