MPRJ4: You Cannot Install Microsoft Project from Floppy Disks (310445)

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Perform an Administrative Install of Microsoft Project 4.0 to a Networked Computer

You can perform an administrative installation of Microsoft Project to another computer that is connected to your computer over a network, and then run Setup from the administrative installation on the other computer.

To run Microsoft Project 4.0 Setup in Network Administrative mode, follow these steps:

1. Press the COMMAND (Apple) key while double-clicking the Microsoft Project Setup icon on the Install Disk 1.
2. Continue holding down the COMMAND key until you are presented with the Welcome dialog box.
3. Click OK, and then select one of the following options:
   • Mode 1: Copies the floppy images to the network server folder that you specify, from which you can select the Minimum, Typical, or Complete/Custom installation option to install Microsoft Project on another networked computer.
     
     -or-
   • Mode 2: Copies all of the files to the network server folder that you specify, from which you can install Microsoft Project on another networked computer by using a workstation installation. When you run a workstation installation, Microsoft Project copies only a few necessary files to the networked computer; most of the files are used directly from the server location. You can run the workstation installation by double-clicking the Microsoft Project Setup icon in the network installation. The workstation installation option installs aliases for files that are normally double-clicked from the desktop, including Microsoft Project and the Help files.
4. Enable File Sharing on the networked computer:
   1. In Control Panels, select File Sharing, and then click the Start/Stop tab.
   2. In the File Sharing section of the dialog box, click the Start button to turn on File Sharing. (If File Sharing is already turned on, this is a Stop button.)
   3. Open the folder that you created in step 3, which contains the administrative installation of Microsoft Project.
   4. On the File menu, point to Get Info, and then click Sharing.
   5. Click to select the Share this item and its contents check box. Close the File Sharing text box.
5. On the computer that you want to install Microsoft Project on, open the Chooser.
6. In the Chooser, click the Appleshare icon, and then click the computer that you want to connect to.
7. Click OK, and then type the user name and password as required. Click Connect.
8. Close the Chooser, and then, on the desktop, locate the icon for the Appleshare instance that you just connected to.
9. Double-click the icon, and then locate the Setup file for Microsoft Project.
10. Run Microsoft Project Setup.

Method 2: Install Microsoft Project 4.0 from a Networked Computer

You can copy the contents of the Microsoft Project disks to a folder on another computer that is connected to your computer over a network, and then run Setup from the copy on the other computer.

NOTE: All of the disks must be copied to subfolders of the same folder. There must be subfolders on the computer's hard disk that match the name of the disks being saved.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Create a new folder on the hard disk of the networked computer.
2. Insert the first Microsoft Project floppy disk into the floppy-disk drive of the networked computer, and then note the name of the disk.
3. Create a subfolder inside the new folder that you created, and then rename the subfolder to match the name of the inserted disk. (The subfolder names should be Disk1, Disk2, Disk3, and so on.)
4. Copy the contents of the inserted disk to the subfolder of the same name.
5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 until you have copied all of the Microsoft Project disks to the hard disk.
6. Enable File Sharing on the networked computer:
   1. In Control Panels, select File Sharing, and then click the Start/Stop tab.
   2. In the File Sharing section of the dialog box, click the Start button to turn on File Sharing. (If File Sharing is already turned on, this is a Stop button.)
   3. Open the folder that you created that contains the copies of the Microsoft Project floppies.
   4. On the File menu, point to Get Info, and then click Sharing.
   5. Click to select the Share this item and its contents check box. Close the File Sharing text box.
7. On the computer that you want to install Microsoft Project on, open the Chooser.
8. In the Chooser, click the Appleshare icon, and then click the computer that you want to connect to.
9. Click OK, and then type the user name and password as required. Click Connect.
10. Close the Chooser, and then locate the icon for the Appleshare that you just connected to on the desktop.
11. Double-click the icon, and then locate the Setup file for Microsoft Project.
12. Run Microsoft Project Setup.

Method 3: Copy the Contents of the Microsoft Project 4.0 Disks to a Writable CD-ROM

If you have a computer with a CD-ROM writer and a floppy-disk drive available, you can copy the contents of the Microsoft Project disks to a writable CD-ROM and then run Setup from the copy on the CD-ROM.

NOTE: All of the floppy disks must be copied to subfolders of the same folder. There must be subfolders on the CD-ROM that match the name of disks being saved.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Create a new folder on the hard disk of the computer that has a CD-ROM writer and a floppy-disk drive available.
2. Insert the first Microsoft Project floppy disk into the floppy-disk drive, and then note the name of the disk.
3. Create a subfolder inside the new folder that you created, and then rename the subfolder to match the name of the inserted disk. (The subfolder names should be Disk1, Disk2, Disk3, and so on.)
4. Copy the contents of the inserted disk to the subfolder of the same name.
5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 until you have copied all of the Microsoft Project disks to the hard disk.
6. Copy the contents of the folder containing the copies of the floppy disks to a writable CD-ROM.
7. On the computer that you want to install Microsoft Project on, insert the CD-ROM containing the copies of the floppy disks.
8. Locate the Setup file for Microsoft Project, and then run Microsoft Project Setup.

Method 4: Obtain a Floppy-Disk Drive

You may be able to obtain a floppy-disk drive that you can connect to your computer through a USB port. Contact your Macintosh dealer for more information.
