PRB: DeviceFilters Cause Configuration Error (310428)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Mobile Internet Toolkit (MMIT)

This article was previously published under Q310428

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to browse a Web Form (.aspx file), you may receive the following error message:
Unrecognized configuration section 'deviceFilters'

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Microsoft Mobile Internet Toolkit (MMIT) adds a <deviceFilters> section to the Web.config file. The error message referenced in the "Symptoms" section of this article can occur if the MMIT runtime is not installed correctly on the Web server. The MMIT runtime is contained in the System.Web.Mobile.dll file that is found in the following directory by default:

<hdd:>\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\<version>

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, reinstall the MMIT runtime, close any programs that are running, and then re-run the MMIT installation program. The Complete Install option installs the runtime by default. If you use the Custom Install option, install the Mobile Internet Controls Runtime option to the local hard disk.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
