After you send a message, the message may contain extra header information when the recipient opens it, such as:
Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"
Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, delete and recreate your e-mail account. To do that:
- On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
- Double-click the account that sends the extra header information, write down all the settings for the account, and then click OK.
- Click the account, and then click Delete.
- Click New, and then recreate the account. Use the settings information that you wrote down in step 2.
- Send a test message from the new account to verify that the extra headers no longer appear.
MORE INFORMATION
The extra header information is Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) header information. MIME is an Internet protocol that allows the exchange of electronic mail that has rich content, across a variety of environments. MIME has been adopted and extended by non-mail applications.
MIME is a standard that allows binary data to be published and read on the Internet. The header of a file that has binary data contains the MIME type of the data. This information tells client programs (Web browsers and mail programs, for example) that they must handle the data in a different way from how they handle straight text. For example, the header of a Web document that contains a JPEG graphic contains the MIME type that is specific to the JPEG file format so that the browser uses its JPEG viewer to display the file.
