SYMPTOMS

When Internet Explorer makes a POST request for data with a MIME type that is handled by a custom ActiveX control, Internet Explorer stops downloading the data after the first portion is received. This problem occurs with large data responses (over roughly 20 KB).

CAUSE

Internet Explorer uses the first part of the downloaded data to determine what type of data it is, but does not download the remainder of the data.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Internet Explorer 6. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

328548 How to Obtain the Latest Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
Date Time Version Size File name
   ------------------------------------------------------
   12-Nov-2001 11:14 6.0.2711.1200 479,232 Urlmon.dll

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can either use a GET request, or you can make a POST request for the HTML file that hosts the ActiveX control by using the OBJECT tag.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem can occur with ActiveX control-based MIME handlers other than Adobe Acrobat. Internet Explorer contains code to handle Portable Document Format (PDF) files in a different manner that causes the file to be downloaded completely.

The hotfix also corrects a problem in which double GET requests are sent when you click a link for MIME data that is handled by an ActiveX control.
