XL2001: Recipient Cannot Open Excel 2001 File That You Send Through AOL E-mail (310332)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q310332

SYMPTOMS

After you use America Online (AOL) e-mail on a Macintosh computer to send an Excel 2001 file to a recipient who uses a version of Microsoft Excel for Windows, the recipient cannot open the file.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the AOL client software compresses the file by using the Stuffit file format (SIT) but the Windows-based computer does not have Stuffit Expander for Windows installed. By default, the .sit extension is usually hidden on Windows-based computers.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, have the recipient download and install Stuffit Expander for Windows. The program is available from the following Aladdin Systems Web site: After the program is installed, the recipient can double-click the file to expand it.
