Network Clients and Protocols Not Included in Windows XP (310310)

SUMMARY

This article discusses the following network clients and protocols which are not part of Microsoft Windows XP:

Clients:

Banyan MS-DOS/Windows 3.1
Novell NetWare [Workstation Shell 3.x (NETX)]
Novell NetWare [Workstation Shell 4.0 and later Virtual Loadable Module (VLM)]

Protocols:

Banyan Virtual Integrated Network Service (VINES) Ethernet
Banyan VINES Token Ring
Microsoft Data Link Control (DLC)
Microsoft 32-bit DLC

NOTE: The preceding components are available in Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, and Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE).

Several network components are not included with Windows XP because of their dependence on real-mode configuration. If these components are detected during Windows XP Setup, you receive a message that informs you that they must be removed before Setup can proceed.

Clients:

Banyan MS-DOS/Windows 3.1 client.
Novell NetWare [Workstation Shell 3.X (NETX)]: This client predates Windows 95 and provides read-mode communication with NetWare 3.X and 4.X servers. At this time, no 32-bit clients are available from Novell to enable Windows XP to communicate with NetWare servers.
Novell NetWare [Workstation Shell 4.0 and above (VLM)]: This client predates Windows 95 and provides real-mode communication with NetWare 3.X and 4.X servers. At this time, no 32-bit clients are available from Novell to enable Windows XP to communicate with NetWare servers.

NOTE: The protect-mode Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks is still included with Windows XP Professional. Windows XP Home Edition does not include this client.

Protocols:

Banyan VINES Ethernet Protocol: This protocol requires real-mode configuration support. Banyan has provided Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) support for VINES since 1995.
Banyan VINES Token Ring Protocol: This protocol requires real-mode configuration support. Banyan has provided TCP/IP protocol support for VINES since 1995. Token Ring network adaptor drivers are not provided with Windows XP.
Microsoft DLC Protocol: This protocol requires real-mode configuration support, which is not available in Windows XP. It is typically used to communicate with IBM mainframe computers and Hewlett-Packard (HP) network-ready printers. This must be removed manually before Windows XP can be installed.
Microsoft 32-bit DLC Protocol: This protocol has the same function as the real-mode DLC and depends on a real-mode stub to load. This must be removed manually before Windows XP can be installed.
