How To Filter ISA Server Web Proxy Cache Entries in Windows 2000 (310150)

SUMMARY

This step-by-step article describes how to filter ISA Server Web Proxy cache entries. The ISA Server 2000 Web Proxy service provides forward and reverse caching of Web objects that are requested by ISA Server clients. Web Proxy clients take advantage of the Web cache directly. SecureNAT and Firewall clients can also utilize the Web Proxy cache through the HTTP Redirector Application Filter.

You can control content that is stored in the Web cache by creating Web Routing Rules. The Web Routing Rules can be configured to not cache objects from servers, domains, or even specific pages. The Routing Rule will allow access to Web objects while it prevents the objects from being placed in the cache.

If you want to filter all external or internal sites or all destinations, you do not need to create a Destination Set to support the Routing Rule.

Create the Destination Set

1. Open the ISA Management console. Expand your server or array name, and then expand the Policy Elements node in the left pane of the console.
2. Right-click the Destination Sets node, click New and then click Set.
3. Type a name for the destination set in the Name box. Type a meaningful description of the destination set in the Description (optional) box. It may be helpful to include the FQDN or IP address or IP address range in the Description (optional) box, because the description appears in other configuration dialog boxes.
4. Click the Add button. In the Add/Edit dialog box, click the Destination option button, and then type the FQDN of the site you want to filter. Alternatively, you can select the IP addresses option, and then type the first IP address in the From text box and the last IP address in the To (optional) box if you need to specify a range. If you need to specify a single IP address, you can type it in the From box, and leave the To (optional) box blank. If you want to filter a portion of the site, you can type a path in the Path box.
5. Click OK in the Add/ Edit dialog box. Click OK again in the New Destination Set dialog box.

Create the Web Routing Rule

1. Open the ISA Management console. Expand your server or array name, and then expand the Network Configuration node in the left pane of the console.
2. Right-click on the Routing node in the left pane of the ISA Management console, point to New, and then click Rule.
3. On the Welcome to the New Routing Rule Wizard page, type the name of your Caching Filtering Rule, and then click Next.
4. On the Destination Sets page, in the Apply this rule box, click the Specified destination set entry. In the Name box, click the destination set you want to filter. Note the FQDN or IP addresses that appear in the Description box. Click Next.
5. On the Request Action page, click the Retrieve them directly from specified destination option. Click Next.
6. On the Cache Retrieval Configuration page, select your preferred cache retrieval option. Note that if you select the Any version of the requested object. Never route the request option, you will not be able to access content on the destination site unless it already existed in the cache before you configured your filtering rule. Click Next.
7. On the Cache Content Configuration page, select the No content will ever be cached option. Click Next.
8. On the Complete the New Routing Rule Wizard page, review your selections, and then click Finish.

Troubleshooting

You do not need to restart the Web Proxy service for the rule to take effect. However, you may want the restart the Web Proxy service if you want the rule to take effect immediately.
