SYMPTOMS

When you select (highlight) text that you want to delete, and you then press DELETE, the cursor may move to the beginning of the selection instead of deleting the text.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Typing replaces selection check box is not selected on the Edit tab under Preferences.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, select the Typing replaces selection check box. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Edit menu if you are using Word 2001, or on the Tools menu if you are using Word 98, click Preferences, and then click the Edit tab.
  2. Click to select the Typing replaces selection check box, and then click OK.
  3. Select the text that you want to delete, and then press DELETE.
