Please consult the OSE documentation for more information and record the error number before contacting Microsoft Product Support.
You receive the error message when you click Next on the Web Collaboration Database page after you select the database name and password.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when Microsoft SQL Server is set to use the Windows Authentication mode (Trusted connection). By default, the Server Extensions Configuration Wizard uses SQL Server authentication to connect to the SQL Server-based collaboration database. As a result, the connection fails and you receive the error message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change the authentication mode to SQL Server authentication. To do so, follow these steps.

NOTE: This procedure is only an example. Use a secure password when you set up authentication credentials on your server.
  1. In SQL Enterprise Manager, right-click the server name, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Security tab, and then make sure that the Authentication method is SQL Server and Windows.
  3. Click OK to close the SQL Sever Properties dialog box.
  4. Right-click the server name, and then click Edit SQL Server Registration properties.
  5. Under Connection, click Use SQL Server authentication. Type sa in the Login Name box, and then leave the Password box blank. Click OK.
  6. Right-click the server name, and then click Stop.
  7. Right-click the server name, and then click Start.
  8. Start Office Server Extensions Setup.
  9. When Server Extensions Setup is complete, click Configure to start the Server Extensions Configuration Wizard, and then click Next.
  10. When you are prompted to choose a name for the database that will be used to store the Web Discussions and Subscriptions for your Web site, leave the default name. This database was created on the SQL Server during Office Server Extensions Setup.
  11. Leave the Password box blank, and then click Next.
  12. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the configuration process.
