SYMPTOMS
When you install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Desktop Engine from a CD-ROM, after you install the release (RTM) bits from CD-ROM, the service pack setup may fail. During the installation, the SQL Server 2000 SP1 setup prompts you to point to the source MSI files with a dialog box that has the following text:
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'SQLRun01.msi' in the box below.
The SQL Server 2000 SP1 dialog box also has a drop-down combo box titled Use feature from:. If you specify the path to the required MSI file on the Desktop Engine RTM CD-ROM in the combo box, the following error message occurs and prevents the setup from succeeding:
Error 1706. An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlrun01.msi'.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use either of the methods that follow.
Method 1- Copy the Desktop Engine RTM installation files from CD-ROM to a local disk drive or network share and perform the installation.
- When the SQL Server 2000 SP1 setup prompts you for the location of the installation package, point it to the installation files on the local disk or network share.
Method 2- Insert the Desktop Engine release CD in the CD-ROM drive of another computer.
- Share the CD-ROM drive, map a drive letter to that shared drive, and then read the data from the mapped drive instead of directly reading it from the CD-ROM drive.
For example, if you create a share on the CD-ROM named MYCD and X:\ is an unmapped, available drive letter, you can perform the following from the command prompt:
NET USE X: \\Servername\MYCD
You can also use Microsoft Windows Explorer to map to the CD-ROM share. - Run the SQL Server 2000 SP1 Desktop Engine setup and specify X:\Setup\SqlRun01.msi when prompted to specify the installation files location.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft SQL Server 2000. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2.
