The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions) SP1

This article was previously published under Q308813
BUG #: 353984 (SHILOH_BUGS)

SYMPTOMS

On computers that have the Shared Memory Protocol disabled, after you install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1 and the setup completes successfully, you may see that the shared memory protocol is set to "on."

CAUSE

The SQL Server 2000 SP1 setup needs shared memory set to "on" when you upgrade or configure the server. Hence, the Service Pack setup sets the shared memory protocol to "on." However, the setup does not set the option to "off" after the setup completes.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, set the Shared Memory protocol to "off" after you install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1 by using the Client Network Utility.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

You can disable the Shared Memory Net-Library by using the Client Network Utility. Use of the Client Network Utility disables the shared memory client connections to the SQL Server server. The clients that run on the SQL Server computer are the only ones that use the Shared-memory connections.
