Master Audio Volume Does Not Persist Through Reboot (308706)

When you change any volume settings by using the Volume Control tool in Control Panel (Sndvol32.exe) and then restart your computer, the Master Volume control takes on the setting of the last volume setting you adjusted. This problem occurs only on computers that have installed on them both the ESS Maestro sound card and the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

CAUSE
This problem can occur because the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article applies the last changed volume value (which is stored in the registry) to the master volume:

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:
- Before you quit the Volume Control tool, ensure that the Master Volume control setting is the last adjustment you make.
- After you restart your computer, start the Volume Control tool, and then readjust the Master Volume control to the desired setting.
