INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP. You can use the Network Setup Wizard to configure the Internet connection for the computer and the home network configuration for all computers on your home network.

MORE INFORMATION

The Network Setup Wizard configures your software to set up a Windows XP-based computer for use on a small home network. The wizard can help you set up the following items:
  • A connection to the Internet for the computer through a direct dial-up or broadband connection or through another computer on the home network.
  • Internet Connection Sharing on a Windows XP-based computer for sharing a connection to the Internet with other computers on the home network. (However, for security reasons, we recommend that you use a router rather than Internet Connection Sharing.)
  • Computer name, computer description, and workgroup name.
  • File and printer sharing.
The Network Setup Wizard is also portable. You can create a Network Setup Wizard disk to automatically configure Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, and Windows XP.

You can also use the wizard from the Windows XP CD-ROM to configure other computers in the home network. To do this, insert the CD-ROM, click Perform Additional Tasks, and then click the option to Set up a home or small office network.
