You Cannot Create a Workspace and an Event ID 20485 Error Message Is Logged in the Application Event Log (308389)

SYMPTOMS

You may not be able to create a workspace, and you may receive the following error message:
Object or data matching the name, range, or selection criteria was not found within the scope of this operation.
The following error message may be logged in the Application event log:
Event ID: 20485
Source: SharePoint Portal Server
Category: None
Type: Error
Description: Workspace Creation - An index could not be created. Object or data matching the name, range, or selection criteria was not found within the scope of this operation.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the IP Address list specifies the IP address in the properties of the default Web site or if a host header is added for the site.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
  2. Right-click the Default Web Site.
  3. Open the properties of the default Web site.
  4. Click the Web Site tab, and then click (All Unassigned) in the IP Address list.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Stop and then start the default Web site.

MORE INFORMATION

IMPORTANT: The requirement for the (All Unassigned) option is for the default Web site only. For any additional Web sites that you create to access a SharePoint Portal Server workspace, use a specific IP address, not the (All Unassigned) option.
