You Cannot Install the May 24th, 2001 Security Update from the Windows Update Web Site (308326)

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, download Q299618.exe (the executable file for the May 24, 2001 Security Update) from the Microsoft Internet Explorer site, and then install the update. To do this, use any of the following methods.

Method 1: Download and Install the Self-extracting Q299618.exe File

1. In your browser, connect to the following Microsoft Web site:

   http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q299618/default.asp

2. Under Download, click the appropriate language in the Select Language box, and then click Go.
3. Click Security Update.
4. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
5. In the Save As dialog box, click Desktop, and then click Save.
6. Double-click the Q299618.exe file, and then click Yes if you receive a message to install the update.
   
   The Q299618.exe file is a self-extracting, self-installing file.
7. Click Yes when you receive the message to restart your computer.
8. Connect to the following Microsoft Web site to verify that the update is successfully installed:

   http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

IMPORTANT: If the update does not install successfully by using this method, follow the steps in either Method 2 or Method 3 to extract the file and install the update.

Method 2: Use WinZip to Extract the Q299618.exe File

NOTE: Before you follow the steps described in this section, WinZip must be installed on your computer. If WinZip is not installed on your computer, you can download and install an evaluation copy of WinZip from the following WinZip Web site:

1. Use the procedure described in Method 1 to download the Q299618.exe file and save it to your desktop.
2. Right-click the Q299618.exe file, and then click Extract to folder.
3. Double-click the Q299618 folder.
4. Right-click the Q299618.inf file, and then click Install.
   
   If you receive a message that states that you have a newer version of a file on your system, do not replace the newer file.
5. When the installation of the update is finished, click Yes when you receive the message to restart your computer.
6. Connect to the following Microsoft Web site to verify that the update is successfully installed:

   http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Method 3: Manually Extract the Q299618.exe File

If you do not want to use a file compression utility such as WinZip to extract the file, follow these steps:

1. Use the procedure described in Method 1 to download the Q299618.exe file and save it to your desktop.
2. Right-click the Q299618.exe file, and then click Create Shortcut.
3. Right-click the shortcut that you created, and then click Properties.
4. Place your insertion point at the end of the path in the Target box, press SPACEBAR, and then type the following line:

   /c /t:c:\windows\desktop\Q299618

   For example, after you complete this step, the following path may be displayed in the Target box:

   C:\Windows\Desktop\Q299618.exe /c /t:C:\Windows\Desktop\Q299618

5. Click OK.
6. Double-click the shortcut.
   
   When you do so, a Q299618 folder is created on your desktop and the files are extracted to that folder.
7. Double-click the Q299618 folder.
8. Right-click the Q299618.inf file, and then click Install.
   
   If you receive a message that states that you have a newer version of a file on your system, do not replace the newer file.
9. When the installation of the update is finished, click Yes when you receive the message to restart your computer.
10. Connect to the following Microsoft Web site to verify that the update is successfully installed:
