"Stop 0x21a" Error Message Occurs If You Download a RIPrep Image (308299)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
This article was previously published under Q308299 SYMPTOMS
If you download a Remote Installation Preparation wizard (RIPrep) image from a Windows 2000-based server that is running Remote Installation Services, you may receive the following error message:
STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
CAUSE
This issue may occur if any of the following conditions are true:
- Windows 2000-based server that is running Remote Installation Services contains a Windows Preinstall Environment (WinPE) image.
- The folder name in which the WinPE image is stored is listed before the name of the Windows XP backing flat image (the image that is created when you run Risetup.exe) because the first letter of the folder in which the WinPE image is stored occurs earlier in the alphabet. For example, the WinPE image is stored in the following folder:
D:\Reminst\Setup\Language\Images\Winpe.xp
The Windows XP backing flat image is stored in the following folder:
D:\Reminst\Setup\Language\Images\Xp.rtm
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, rename the folder in which the Windows XP backing flat image is stored to a name that starts with a letter that occurs earlier in the alphabet than the first letter of the folder in which the WinPE image is stored.
