Error Message When You Try to Start Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Setup by Using Autorun.inf (308080)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Setup by using Autorun.inf from the installation CD, you may receive the following error message:

Warning: The 'title' bitmap has 8 bits per pixel, it must be changed to 4BPP (16 colors).

CAUSE

This issue occurs when your display settings are configured to use 16 colors. Internet Explorer 6.0 Setup requires a color depth of greater than 16 colors.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change your display settings to a color depth that is greater than 16 colors. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Display, and then click the Settings tab.
  3. In the Colors list, select a color depth that is greater than 16 colors (for example, High Color (16 bit)), and then click OK.
  4. In the Compatibility Warning dialog box, click Restart the computer with the new color setting, and then click OK.
  5. Click Yes to restart the computer.
