This article was previously published under Q308027 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to print a publication in CMYK separations (or plates), and the publication contains a grayscale image, the image appears on each of the four plates, not on only the black plate as expected.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, use any of the following methods.
Method 1
Convert the image to Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) format, and then link it to the publication. To do this, follow these steps:
- Open the grayscale image that you want to include in your publication by using photo-editing software that permits you to create files in EPS format. Save the image in EPS format, and then quit the photo editor.
- Start Microsoft Publisher, and then open your publication.
- On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click From File.
- In the Insert Picture dialog box, select the grayscale EPS image that you created in step 1, and then click the down arrow to the right of the Insert button. Click Link to File.
- On the Tools menu, point to Commercial Printing Tools, and then click Color Printing.
- Under Print all colors as, select Process colors (CMYK), and then click OK.
The grayscale picture now prints on only the black plate.
Method 2
If all photo images are in grayscale, print the publication by using spot colors. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Publisher, and then open your publication.
- On the Tools menu, point to Commercial Printing Tools, and then click Color Printing.
- Under Print all colors as, select Spot color(s), and then click OK.
All images now print in grayscale and on only the black plate.
Method 3
Recolor the grayscale image in black, and then print by using process colors. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Publisher, and then open your publication.
- Select the grayscale image, and then click Picture on the Format menu.
- Click the Picture tab in the Format Picture dialog box, and then click Recolor.
- In the Color box, select Black, and then click OK twice.
- On the Tools menu, point to Commercial Printing Tools, and then click Color Printing.
- Under Print all colors as, select Process colors (CMYK), and then click OK.
The grayscale picture now prints on only the black plate.
