  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

This article was previously published under Q307910

SYMPTOMS

If you upgrade your computer to Windows XP from Windows 98 with Windows Installer 1.1, user profiles may not be migrated. When this occurs, the following message appears in the Windows XP upgrade report:
Settings That Will Not Be Upgraded
Shared user account
If the user profiles were already created before the Windows Installer 1.1 installation, this symptom does not occur.

CAUSE

If a user profile is created after the installation of Windows Installer 1.1, some system information is set to refer to the system shared folder, not the user profile folder.

RESOLUTION

To avoid this problem, create user profiles before the installation of Windows Installer 1.1.

STATUS

This behavior is by design. This is the design of the environment settings for the migration of Windows 98 with Windows Installer 1.1.

MORE INFORMATION

This symptom does not occur with Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

Some programs require Windows Installer 1.1 or later versions for installation. In this case, Windows Installer 1.1 is automatically installed when you install the program. These products include:
  • Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 and later versions
  • Microsoft Office XP
