When you start your Windows 2000-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details.
The System Log in Event Viewer may have the following entry:
Event ID 12291
Source: SAM
Description: SAM failed to start the TCP/IP or SPX/IPX listening thread.
This entry may be followed by additional 7002, 7003 and 7022 entries such as:
Event ID 7002
Source: Service Control Manager
Description: The Distributed File System service depends on the following nonexistent service: LanmanWorkstation
CAUSE
This issue can occur if the Client for Microsoft Networks is not installed.
RESOLUTION
To install the Client for Microsoft Networks:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.
- Click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties on the File menu. Click Install.
- Click Clients, click Add, click Client for Microsoft Networks, and then click OK.
NOTE: This procedure adds the Client for Microsoft Networks to all network connections, not just the one you have selected. Restart your computer.
