"This Feature Cannot Be Installed" Error Message After You Upgrade Your Display Adapter (307685)

After you upgrade to a display adapter that has 16 megabytes (MB) or more of video memory, you may still not be able to use the Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP features that must have this upgraded display adapter.
Specifically, you may receive the following error message when you try to install one of the new features:
This feature cannot be installed because your computer does not contain a video card with at least 16 megabytes of memory. Verify that your computer meets the minimum system requirements for Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if both of the following conditions are true:
- You attempt to install Plus! for Windows XP on a computer that has a display adapter with less than 16 MB of memory.
- You later upgrade the display adapter to one that has video memory of 16 MB or more.
This behavior may also occur if any one of the following conditions is true: - Microsoft NetMeeting is running when you try to install Plus! for Windows XP.
- Hardware acceleration on your display adapter is set to none.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, remove and then reinstall Plus! for Windows XP. To do so, follow these steps:
- Log on to the computer as Administrator.
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Add or Remove Programs.
- Click Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP, click Remove, and then click Yes to confirm the removal.
- After Plus! for Windows XP is removed, click Close, and then close Control Panel.
- Insert the Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive to start the Installation Wizard. Follow the instructions to install Plus! for Windows XP.
If NetMeeting is running while you try to install Plus! for Windows XP, quit NetMeeting from the Call menu, and then verify that your display adapter has hardware acceleration enabled. Plus! for Windows XP should now install correctly. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
