Plus! for Windows XP Screen Savers May Not Work on Voodoo Chipset-Based Video Adapters (307677)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP

This article was previously published under Q307677

SYMPTOMS

Many of the screen savers that are included with Plus! for Windows XP are not displayed correctly on computers that use a video adapter that is based on the Voodoo chipset. Such video adapters are often named "Voodoo Adapter_name, where Adapter_name is "Banshee," "2," "3," or "4". For example, a video adapter might be named "Voodoo Banshee" or "Voodoo 3."

Symptoms of this issue include a blank screen, blank or missing regions on the screen, horizontal or vertical lines in the screen, or blurred or incorrect colors.

CAUSE

Windows XP does not include drivers for these video adapters. 3Dfx Interactive, Inc. went out of business at the beginning of 2001 and no longer provides driver updates to Microsoft. All assets and intellectual property of 3Dfx were purchased by NVIDIA Corporation. However, drivers for these video adapters may be present if you upgraded the computer from a Beta or "Release Candidate" version of Windows XP.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, obtain an updated driver for the video adapter.
