SYMPTOMS

When you try to run Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Setup from a terminal service session and the setup files reside on a mapped drive, you may receive the following error messages in both Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET Setup and the Windows Components Update:
"Microsoft Visual Studio .Net
Windows Component Update

SETUP FAILED

The following components failed to install:

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Web Extensions Client
Setup Runtime Files
Microsoft Visual Studio .Net

Setup Failed

There were errors during setup."
The setup log named Baserrorlog.txt displays the following error message for the Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Web Extensions Client and Setup Runtime Files components:
The system cannot find the path specified.
				
During the Visual Studio portion of the Setup routine, Setup fails shortly after you receive the End User License Agreement screen. The following information appears in the setup log named VSMSILog*.txt:
MSI (c) (D4:00): MainEngineThread is returning 3
				

CAUSE

You cannot install certain Windows Update components and Visual Studio components from a mapped drive.

RESOLUTION

Use the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) to install Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

To reproduce the problem, follow these steps:
  1. Use a terminal service session to log on to a Windows 2000 Terminal Server as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Map a drive on the terminal server to a location on the network where installation files for Microsoft Visual Studio .NET are located.
  3. In Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs, and then install Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET from the files on the mapped drive.
