Error Message: Cannot Display Objects from This Location Because of the Following Error: The Server Is Not Operational (306980)

SYMPTOMS

When you choose a trusted Windows 2000-based domain to gain access to the user list across an external trust, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot display objects from this location because of the following error:

The server is not operational.

CAUSE

This error message can occur if no SRV records are registered in Domain Name System (DNS) on the trusting domain for domain controllers that are located in the trusted domain.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. Add a standard secondary forward lookup zone on the DNS server in the trusting domain:
    1. Start the DNS snap-in, expand the server, right-click Forward Lookup Zones, and then click New Zone.
    2. Click Next, click Standard secondary, and then click Next.
    3. Type the name of the trusted domain, and then click Next.
    4. Choose to create a new file named Domain.dns, and then click Next.
    5. Click Finish.
  2. Configure the DNS server in the trusted domain to perform zone transfers with the DNS server in the trusting domain:
    1. Start the DNS snap-in, expand the server, and then open the properties of the trusted domain's forward lookup zone. Click the Zone Transfers tab.
    2. Select the Allow zone transfers check box.
    3. Click Only to the following servers, type the IP address of the trusting domain's DNS server, and then click OK.
  3. On the DNS server in the trusting domain, start the DNS snap-in, expand the server, and then expand Forward Lookup Zones.
  4. Right-click the secondary zone, and then click Transfer from master.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
