SUMMARY

This article describes how to directly access File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Web sites with Internet Explorer 5.5.

MORE INFORMATION

To access FTP sites directly, type the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in the Address box for the FTP site to which you want to connect, for example:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com

How to Download a File or Folder

To download a file or folder, right-click the file or folder, and then click Copy to Folder.

How to Log On As a Different User

To log on to the FTP site as a different user, click Login As on the File menu.

How to Rename, Delete, or Upload Items

To rename or delete items in an FTP folder, or to paste items to an FTP site (upload), right-click the item, and then click Rename, Delete, or Paste just as you can when you use either Windows Explorer or My Computer.

Notes

  • On some FTP sites, you can only view or download files. Only the people who run or own the site can rename, delete, or upload files.
  • On many FTP sites, you are automatically logged on anonymously, so you can view or download files. To upload, rename, or delete files, you may need to log on with a special user name and password. Also, different areas of the same site may require different logon names and passwords.
  • You cannot move files in or between FTP sites. You can move files from an FTP site to a temporary location on your computer or on a network drive, and then upload them to another FTP site or to a different folder on the same site.
  • You may be able to open or save files from FTP servers if you type an FTP address in the File Open or File Save dialog box when you use a program that supports this feature.
