Error Message: Cannot Install Licenses on an Evaluation Copy of Small Business Server (306745)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Small Business Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q306745

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade an evaluation edition of Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 to a full retail version of SBS 2000, you may receive the following error message when you try to run the Licensing tool from the Administrative tools:
Cannot install licenses on an evaluation copy of Small Business Server.

CAUSE

This error message can occur if the Sbslimit.dll file is the incorrect version. Note that this error is cosmetic only because you must add licenses in SBS by using the console or manually by running Setup.exe from a Client Add Pack.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, replace the Sbslimit.dll file with the correct version:
  1. Rename the %SystemRoot%\System32\Sbslimit.dll file to Sbslimit.old.
  2. Insert CD-ROM 3 of your SBS 2000 CD-ROM set.
  3. From CD-ROM 3, copy the Bkoffice\I386\Setup\Sbslimit.dll file to the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

After you copy the Sbslimit.dll file from the CD-ROM, you may receive the following error message when you run the Licensing tool (Llsmgr.exe) from the Administrative tools:
To add more licenses, refer to Small Business Server console.
When you copy the retail version of the Sbslimit.dll file, this has no effect on licensing. When you run the licencing tool, you just receive a different error message.
