Video May Not Be Displayed Properly with NeoMagic or ATI Video Adapters (306699)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Media Player for Windows XP Home Edition
- Microsoft Windows Media Player for Windows XP Professional
This article was previously published under Q306699 SYMPTOMS
When you play video or DVD video in Windows Media Player for Windows XP, the video may be clipped. The video may not resize to be larger or smaller when you resize the player. Also, the Fit to Window and Full Screen modes may not function properly.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you are using outdated video adapter drivers. The NeoMagic or ATI video adapter driver that you are using may not be compatible with the latest DirectX technology in Microsoft Windows XP. The driver may have limited ability to perform the required functions.
RESOLUTION
To resolve these issues, check with the manufacturer of the video adapter to determine whether an updated video adapter driver that is compatible with the DirectX technology in Windows XP is available.
WORKAROUND
To attempt to work around these issues, follow these steps:
- In Windows Media Player, click Options on the Tools menu.
- On the Performance tab, click Advanced.
- Clear the Use video mixing renderer check boxes in the Video Acceleration and DVD Video sections.
- Click OK, and then click OK.
Using this workaround may allow the video to be displayed properly. When you use this workaround, Windows Media Player uses the legacy video renderer, which does not use new technology that the hardware cannot support.
