Cannot Use Full Screen with Visualizations While Using Terminal Services or Remote Desktop Connection Client (306697)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player for Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player for Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q306697

SYMPTOMS

If you are using a Remote Desktop Connection or Terminal Services session, Windows Media Player cannot display full-screen visualizations. Windows Media Player for Windows XP returns to the previous display mode when you are using a Remote Desktop Connection or Terminal Services session.

CAUSE

When you are using Full-Screen mode, the visualizations use DirectDraw in Exclusive mode. DirectDraw Exclusive mode is not designed to work in a Terminal Services or Remote Desktop Connection session. This prevents Windows Media Player from making a display-mode switch for rendering the full-screen visualization.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The option to use Full-Screen mode while visualizations are enabled is not available in previous versions of Windows Media Player.
