Net Use Command Fails During Unattended Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 Slipstream Setup (306596)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP2
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP2
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP2
This article was previously published under Q306596 SYMPTOMS
An attempt to map a network drive with the net use command during an unattended installation of Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) may fail and it may generate the following error message:
Error 86 "The specified network password is not correct.
This problem ceases after the Graphical User Interface (GUI) portion of Windows 2000 SP2 Setup is complete and the computer is rebooted.
This problem does not occur when the net use command is used against any computer in a different domain, or against a local SAM account on a member server.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if the following conditions exist:
- The unattended Windows 2000 SP 2 installation is slipstreamed. This means that Windows 2000 SP 2 is included within the installation resource files.
- The net use command appears as it does below, and is run directly or indirectly within the Cmdlines.txt file:
NET USE [driveletter:] [\\computername\sharename] [password]
[/USER:[domainname\]username]
- The domainname argument that is used matches the domain the computer is a member of. Note that the network share may be on a domain controller (DC), or any domain member server.
Under the preceding conditions, the Windows 2000 client does not use Windows NT LAN Manager (NTLM) password-based authentication during the attempt to connect to the share.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, substitute a non-existent domain name for the actual domain name in the net use command.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
This problem does not occur with Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
