PRB: Windows Me OPKWiz Program Will Not Open After Upgrade to Internet Explorer 6 or Windows XP (306352)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft OEM Preinstall Kit (OPK) XP
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
This article was previously published under Q306352 SYMPTOMS
After upgrading your OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK) reference computer to Internet Explorer 6 or Microsoft Windows XP (which includes Internet Explorer 6), the OEM System Builder configuration utility for Windows Millennium Edition (Me), OPKWiz.exe, no longer opens and the following error message is seen:
OPKWIZ.EXE requires IE 5.0 to run.
You are unable to create or modify a configuration set to be used to preinstall Windows Me.
CAUSE
The OPKWiz.exe program is hard-coded to check the registry to verify that a version of Internet Explorer 5 has been installed on the reference computer. When this version check finds anything other than Internet Explorer 5, it does not allow the OPKWiz.exe application to be run.
RESOLUTIONIMPORTANT: This article contains information about modifying the registry. Before you
modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore
the registry if a problem occurs. For information about how to back up, restore, and edit the
registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
- Open the registry on the reference computer where the Wizard directory is located.
- Locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\INTERNET EXPLORER
- Navigate to the right pane of Regedit and look for a value called "Version".
- Double-click the value "Version" and change the text in the Edit String box to 5.50.4522.1800.
- Click OK and then exit Registry Editor.
- Return to your Wizard folder. You can correctly open OPKWiz.exe to create or modify a configuration set.
Note that this workaround does not affect the functionality of Internet Explorer 6; it just allows OPKWiz.exe to be run on the reference computer.
STATUS
This issue is seen only when running OPKWiz.exe for Windows Me; the configuration utility runs properly for all other Windows operating systems.
