You receive an error message when you modify a distribution list in Outlook (306349)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000
  • Microsoft Outlook 98

SYMPTOMS

If you try to modify a distribution list (DL) in Microsoft Outlook, you may receive the following error message:
Changes to the distribution list membership could not be saved. You do not have sufficient permissions to perform this operation on this object.
You may receive this error message even though you are using an account that has sufficient permissions, such as a domain Administrator account or an enterprise Administrator account.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the Outlook client is accessing a global catalog in a domain where the distribution groups do not exist.

This global catalog does not contain a writable replication of that Universal Security Group (USG) or Universal Distribution Group (UDG), and you cannot make changes to it.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, move the Universal Security Group or Universal Distribution Group to the same domain where the global catalog and mail-enabled users are located.

As an alternative, you can make the Outlook client use a global catalog server that is in the same domain as the distribution group. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
