SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Windows Character Map to copy characters or symbols and paste them into Microsoft Visio 2002, the characters may appear as question marks (?).

CAUSE

Microsoft Visio 2002 can only accept some Unicode characters without converting the Unicode characters back to TrueType.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, try pasting the characters as unformatted Unicode text. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In Character Map, copy the character you want to use.
  2. Start or switch to Visio.
  3. Double-click where you want to paste the special character.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
  5. Click Unformatted Unicode Text. Click OK.
NOTE: Not all Unicode character codes convert to a TrueType glyph index. Characters that do not have an equivalent may appear as a box or another character.
