PPT2001: "File Cannot Be Found" Error When You View Web Pages Made from AutoContent Templates (306224)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q306224

SYMPTOMS

When you open a set of Web pages that were created in Microsoft PowerPoint 2001 for Mac, and you try to go to the second "slide" of the Web presentation, you receive one of the following error messages.

In Microsoft Internet Explorer for Mac

The file cannot be found.
After you receive this message, the notes from slide 1 appear in all the slides of the presentation, or the Web site may stop responding.

In Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows

You are directed to a Web page the displays the following message:
Cannot find server, the page cannot be displayed.
This happens with the AutoContent templates that PowerPoint installs.

CAUSE

This problem occurs with any presentation that contains notes, and in which at least one slide has been deleted. The problem occurs because the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) code generator uses the slide ID number, which is internal to PowerPoint, rather than the slide index position, to process slides.

The HTML generator uses a lookup table to create the slide images and HTML pages, starting at slide_0001.htm. However, the generator does not use this lookup table when it creates the notes page. Instead, it uses the slide ID number to name the HTML page for the notes page, such as slide_notes_0300.htm, instead of slide_notes_0001.htm.

This discrepancy causes the error message when you try to view the next slide in the Web presentation.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, download and install the Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1 file. To do so, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

STATUS
