How to Configure an MMS Server for LDAP Tracing (306207)

SUMMARY

A Microsoft Metadirectory Services (MMS) server can record the data that is sent to and from its Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDPA) port. An LDAP port trace may be helpful in diagnosing issues with an MMS server.

MORE INFORMATION

Configuring the Server to Record an LDAP Trace

To configure an MMS server to record an LDAP trace:
  1. On the server console, click Options on the Tools menu.
  2. Click the LDAP tracing tab.
  3. Set the trace value to 1.
  4. Click the Log Files tab.
  5. Click Clear Genlogs file now. This deletes the existing backup Genlogs.x log file, renames the current Genlogs file to Genlogs.x, and creates a new Genlogs file.
  6. Perform the necessary LDAP test transactions on the MMS server.
  7. When the test transactions are complete, reset the trace value to 0.
The LDAP trace is located in Zoomserv\Data\Logs\Genlogs.

Changing the Size of the Genlogs File

You can configure the Genlogs files in the Zoomserv\Data\Config\Logcfg file. The "log_max_bytes_in_file" setting has a default value of 500,000 bytes (5 MB) at installation. To change the size of the Genlogs file:
  1. Open the Zoomserv\Data\Config\Logcfg file.
  2. Set the "log_max_bytes_in_file" value to the required size (in bytes). For example, to set the size to 20 MB, set the entry to:

    log_max_bytes_in_file 2000000

  3. Save the Logcfg file.
  4. Stop and restart the MMS service.

Note

The LDAP tracing that is described in this article is limited to LDAP connectivity on the MMS server, such as LDAP client connections made by Compass. LDAP connectivity that is generated by management agents using Cdir_ldp.exe, such as the Microsoft Exchange LDAP management agent, is recorded in a different log named Ldscript.log.
