This article was previously published under Q306076 SYMPTOMS If you attempt to synchronize your Microsoft Exchange
Server mailbox to an offline folder (.ost) file that has reached the 1.82
gigabyte (GB) size limit, you may receive the following error message:
Task 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error
(0x00040820): Errors in background synchronization. In most cases, further
information is available in a synchronization log in the Deleted items folder.
However, the synchronization log does not exist in the Deleted items
folder in the Exchange Server mailbox or in the Deleted items folder in the
.ost file. CAUSE This behavior occurs because Outlook 2002 limits the .ost
file size to approximately 1.82 GB. WORKAROUND Use one of the following methods to work around this
behavior:
- Permanently delete all unwanted messages from any server
based e-mail folders that are set to be synchronized with the .ost file. Press
Shift + Del to permanently delete data in Outlook 2002.
-or-
- Move data from any synchronized folder to a
non-synchronized folder on the Exchange Server. -or-
- Move data from a synchronized folder to a personal folders
(.pst) file, and permanently delete the data from the synchronized
folder.
