SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade a computer from Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 to Windows 2000 Server, the following error message may appear when you click Add/Remove Hardware:
You do not have sufficient security privileges to install or uninstall devices on this computer. Please contact your site administrator or log off and log on again as an administrator and try again.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, grant Administrators the right to load and unload device drivers:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
  2. In the console tree, double-click the domain node.
  3. In the Details pane, right-click the domain controllers organizational unit folder, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Group Policy tab, select the default domain controllers policy, and then click Edit.
  5. Edit the policy to ensure that administrators can load and unload device drivers:
    1. Under Computer Configuration, click Windows Settings, click Security Settings, and then click Local Policies.
    2. Click User Rights Assignment, and then double-click Load and unload device drivers.
    3. Add Administrators.
  6. Restart the computer.
