Error Message When You Try to Install FrontPage Server Extensions to a Virtual Server (306009)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions to a virtual server, you may receive the following error message:
The document root of the web server where you are trying to install
the server extensions already contains a disk-based web.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, publish the Web content to a new virtual server. To do this, follow these steps.

Create a New Web Content Folder

Create a new folder in which to store the Web content. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Explorer, and then navigate to the drive that contains the InetPub folder.
  2. In the All Folders list, click InetPub, point to New on the File menu, and then click Folder.
  3. Type the name that you want for this new Web content folder (for example, Web Content2), and then press ENTER.
  4. Quit Windows Explorer.

Stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service

To stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Services.
  3. Click World Wide Web Publishing Service, and then click Stop.
  4. When you receive a message asking you to confirm stopping the service, click Yes.

    NOTE: When the service is stopped, Started is no longer displayed in the Status list.
  5. Click Close, and then quit Control Panel.

Map the Web Site to the New Content Folder

Direct the virtual server to the new content folder that you created in the "Create a New Web Content Folder" section of this article. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Service Manager.
  2. In the Console Root, expand Internet Information Server.
  3. Expand *Server, where Server is the name of the Web server computer.
  4. Right-click the Web site that you want, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  5. Click the Home Directory tab, and then click Browse.
  6. Browse to the location of the new Web content folder that you created (for example, C:\InetPub\Web Content2), and then click OK.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Quit the Internet Information Services (IIS) Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

Restart the World Wide Web Publishing Service

To restart the World Wide Web Publishing Service, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Services.
  3. Click World Wide Web Publishing Service, and then click Start.
  4. Click Close, and then quit Control Panel.

Install the FrontPage Server Extensions

Install the FrontPage Server Extensions on the virtual server (Web site). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Service Manager.
  2. In the Console Root, expand Internet Information Server.
  3. Expand *Server, where Server is the name of the Web server computer.
  4. Right-click the Web site that you want, point to Task on the shortcut menu, and then click Configure Server Extensions.

    The Configure Server Extensions Wizard starts.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Follow the steps of the Server Extensions Configuration Wizard to install the FrontPage Server Extensions.

    You receive a message that states: "The Office Server Extensions were successfully installed and configured."
  7. Click OK.
  8. Quit the IIS MMC.

Publish the Web Content to the New Folder

Open the existing Web content in Microsoft FrontPage, and then publish it to the virtual directory (Web site). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start FrontPage 2000.
  2. On the File menu, click Open Web.
  3. In the Folder name box, type the location of the existing Web content.

    NOTE: If you are running FrontPage 2000 on a computer other than the Web server computer, you may need to share the folder that contains the Web content.
  4. Click Open. If you are prompted, type your user name, password, and domain in the corresponding boxes, and then click OK.

    The Web is displayed in the Folder List.
  5. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
  6. In the Specify the location to publish your web to box, type the URL of the Web server that you want, and then click Publish.
  7. If you are prompted to provide a name and password, type your name and password in the corresponding boxes, and then click OK.

    NOTE: You may receive the following error message:
    Server error: The folder "/cgi-bin" is marked executable. You are not allowed to put files into an executable folder on this server.
    To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
    1. On the error message, click OK.
    2. In the Publish Web dialog box, click Cancel.
    3. Start Internet Service Manager.
    4. In the Console Root, expand Internet Information Server.
    5. Right-click *Server, where Server is the name of the Web server computer.
    6. On the shortcut menu, click Properties.
    7. Click the Server Extensions tab.
    8. Click to select the Allow authors to upload executables check box, and then click OK.
    9. Quit the IIS MMC.
    10. Follow steps 5 through 7 to publish the Web. If you are prompted to overwrite existing files, click Yes.
  8. When you receive a message that states, "Web site published successfully," click Done.
  9. Quit FrontPage 2000.
