"Wmplayer Has Caused an Error in Wmpcore.dll" Error Message May Be Displayed (305976)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use Windows Media Player, you may receive the following error message:
Wmplayer has caused an error in Wmpcore.dll.
Wmplayer will now close.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when you have damaged Windows Media Player files, usually the Wmcore.dll file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:
  1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  2. Locate the following files:

    Wmplibrary_v_0_12.db
    Wmpscheme.xml
    Wmp.inf
    Wmploc.dll
    Wmplayer.exe
    Wmp.ocx
    Wmpcore.dll
    Wmpui.dll
    Wmpcd.dll
    Wmplenc.dll

  3. Add .old to the name of each file to rename them, for example, rename Wmp.ocx to Wmp.ocx.old.

    NOTE: The Wmp.inf file is located in the C:\Windows\Inf folder. If the Inf folder is hidden, start Windows Explorer, click Folder Options on the Tools menu, and then click to select Show hidden files and folders under Advanced Settings.
After you rename these files, download and install Windows Media Player version 7.1 from the following Microsoft Web site:
