The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q305916

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from a previous version of Windows to Windows XP on a computer that uses a double-byte character set, the Hardware Profile menu may not be displayed correctly.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you use a double-byte character set to name a hardware profile on the Hardware Profiles tab. Windows XP uses the information in the hardware profile to create the text of the Hardware Profile menu. However, the text of the Hardware Profile menu is displayed by using the Unicode character set. Windows XP does not convert the double-byte character set to Unicode.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, change the name of the hardware profile so that it does not use a double-byte character set:
  1. In Control Panel, double-click System, click the Hardware tab, and then click Hardware Profiles.
  2. Click the hardware profile that uses the double-byte character set, and then click Rename.
  3. Type a new name for the hardware profile, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
