Game Port Does Not Work After Upgrade on Some HP Computers with Via AC97 Audio Controller (305862)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
- Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
This article was previously published under Q305862 SYMPTOMS
On some Hewlett-Packard computers that have a built-in audio/game controller, the game port may not function after you upgrade the computer to Windows XP. Device Manager may report a conflict between two identical game port devices. The relevant built-in audio/game controller is a Via AC97 Audio Controller.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because the computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) reports separate Plug and Play identifiers (PnP IDs) for the audio controller and the game port. However, the driver for the audio controller also installs the game port. The second PnP ID installs the game port in a separate instance.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, contact Hewlett-Packard for information about configuring the BIOS to enable legacy audio support and MPU-401 in the BIOS.
NOTE: Configuring the BIOS incorrectly can cause the computer to become unbootable. Do not attempt to make changes to the BIOS unless you have a clear understanding of the procedures that the manufacturer provides.
STATUSThis behavior is by design.
