SYMPTOMS

When you try to start the Disk Management utility under Computer Management, you may receive the following error message:
MMC Snap-In Failed to Initialize Disk Management Extension {8EAD3A12-B2C1-11D0-83AA-00A0C92C9D5D}

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Dmdskmgr.dll file is corrupted or becomes unregistered.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, re-register the Dmdskmgr.dll file:
  1. Click Start, click Run, and then type cmd to start a command prompt.
  2. At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:

    regsvr32 c:\winnt\system32\dmdskmgr.dll
