This article describes Exinfo.exe, which is a diagnostics tool that provides a range of Exchange 2000 Server system state and Active Directory information. Exinfo.exe is designed to run locally on the Exchange 2000 computer. This utility does not make any changes to the system unless the utility is requested to execute a script.

To run Exinfo.exe you must have Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Service Pack 2 (SP2), and Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1 (SP1). Exinfo.exe best runs locally on the computer that runs Exchange Server. The administrator that runs Exinfo.exe must be logged on to the local Exchange 2000 computer by using sufficient permissions to access Windows Management Instrumentation, Active Directory, and whatever scripts are to be run from within Exinfo.exe. After you install Exinfo.exe, you can access Exinfo.exe. To do so, click Start, point to Programs, point to Information Collection Tool, and then click Information Collection Tool. After you initialize the tool, you receive a prompt for the name of the Exchange 2000 computer.
The functions by using Exinfo.exe are divided into three tabs and each tab provides a different function.
- Information Collection: Information Collection collects information from Windows Management Instrumentation Providers and Active Directory. You can also specify Exinfo.exe to generate an LDAP Data Interchange Format (LDIF) file dump of the Configuration container as well as generate an HTML-based report of the Active Directory and Windows Management Instrumentation queries.
- Custom Script: Custom Script provides a user interface to host custom scripts and display human readable text generated by the script; it saves this information to a log file. In addition, this tab enables the log file to be appended or overwritten by subsequent executions of the same script to the same file depending on the user's preference.
- File Collection: File Collection enables the user to package any of the files created by Exinfo.exe or any file on the system into a .cab file.
