Error Message Occurs When You Use a Windows Me Client That Uses a Shared Internet Connection to Connect to the Internet (305667)

When you try to connect to the Internet using a Windows Millennium Edition (Me) client computer that uses a shared Internet connection on a Windows 98 host computer, you may receive the following error message:
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web
site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need
to adjust your browser settings.
CAUSE
This issue can occur because Windows Me requires newer versions of the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) files than the ICS files that are included in Windows 98.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, reconfigure ICS:

- On the Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, remove ICS. To do so:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click the Windows Setup tab.
- In the Components list, click Internet Tools, and then click Details.
- Click to clear the Internet Connection Sharing check box, and then click OK.
- Click the Windows Setup tab, and then click OK.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
- Insert the Home Networking Setup Wizard disk that you created in step 1 into the Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer.
- On the Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, click Start, and then click Run.
- Type a:setup in the Open box, and then click OK.
- Follow the steps in the Home Networking Setup Wizard to install the home network on the Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer.
NOTE: If you receive an error message that reports that Setup is unable to install one or more files, follow these steps:- Cancel the installation.

- Restart the Home Networking Setup Wizard installation.
NOTE: The Home Networking Setup Wizard does not continue because networking is disabled in Safe mode. - Cancel the installation, and then restart Windows (do a typical restart).
- Restart Setup, and then follow the steps in the Home Networking Setup Wizard to configure the home network.
- When you are prompted, restart the computer.
- After the Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer restarts, reinstall ICS:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click the Windows Setup tab, and then double-click Internet Tools.
- Click to select the Internet Connection Sharing check box, click OK, and then click OK.
NOTE: If you receive the following message, click Yes to keep the newer file:
A file being copied is older than the file currently on your
computer. It is recommended that you keep your existing file.
- Follow the instructions to complete the Internet Connection Sharing Setup Wizard.
NOTE: When you are prompted to create an ICS client disk, click Cancel when you receive the "Insert disk" message. - When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
- Log on to the Windows Me-based computer.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type winipcfg, and then click OK.
- Click the Ethernet adapter that is connected to the Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, and then click Release.
The Ethernet adapter information that is displayed is similar to the following information:
IP Address 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway
- Click Renew.
The Ethernet adapter information that is displayed is similar to the following information, where x is an integer between 2 and 254, for example, 4:
IP Address 192.168.0.<x>
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
- Start Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then test the Internet connection.
