SYMPTOMS

When you select a project from the View Your Portfolio page in Microsoft Project Central and then click Open in Microsoft Project, you may receive the following error message:
This project could not be opened in Microsoft Project because it has been moved or no longer exists.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions are true:
  • You select a project on the View Your Portfolio page in Microsoft Project Central and then click Open in Microsoft Project.

    -and-
  • You click Save As on the File menu in Microsoft Project and then save the file to a folder on a local hard disk.

    -and-
  • On the Tools menu in Microsoft Project, you point to Workgroup, and then click Update Project to Web Server.
This behavior occurs if the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path to the shared project no longer exists.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restore the project to its original location, and then update the project to the Web server. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Project.
  2. On the File menu, click Close. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. Browse to the project that you want, select the project, and then click Open.
  4. On the File menu, click Save As.
  5. In the File name box, use the UNC format (\\Server\Share\file name) to type the path to the original shared folder, and then click Save.

For example, if the computer name is "MyServer," the folder is shared as "Project2," and the project name is "myproject," type the following path in the File name box

    \\MyServer\Project2\myproject

    and then click Save.
  6. On the Tools menu, point to Workgroup, and then click Update Project to Web Server.
  7. Click OK in response to the confirmation message that appears.
  8. Quit Microsoft Project.
