PRJ2000: Microsoft Project Stops Responding When You Attempt to Open a Resource Pool (305646)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 2000

WARNING:This information is preliminary and has not been confirmed or tested by Microsoft. Use only with discretion.

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a resource pool, either in stand-alone mode or by opening any of the resource pool's sharer projects, Microsoft Project 2000 may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if one of the sharer projects has a corrupted resource record that has been updated to the resource pool.

NOTE: You may or may not be able to open the sharer project that has the corrupted resource record in stand-alone mode.

WORKAROUND

To resolve this issue, use Method 1. For a temporary workaround, if upgrading to Microsoft Project 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) is not an immediate option, use Method 2.

Method 1: Upgrade to SR-1

Upgrade to Microsoft Project 2000 SR-1. SR-1 has modified code to help prevent the endless-loop issue that causes Microsoft Project to stop responding.

For additional information about how to obtain Microsoft Project 2000 SR-1, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

288953 PRJ2000: How to Obtain and Install Microsoft Project 2000 SR-1

After you upgrade, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Project.
  2. Open the resource pool, and then save the file.
  3. Open each sharer project, and then follow steps 4 through 6 (for each sharer project).
  4. On the Tools menu, point to Resources, and then click Share Resources.
  5. Click Use own resources, and then click OK.
  6. On the File menu, click Save.
  7. For each sharer project and the resource pool, click Save As on the File menu, click the drop-down arrow in the Save as type box, click Project Database (*.mpd), and then click Save twice.
  8. On the File menu, click Close. Repeat this step until all projects are closed.
  9. Open each file in MPD format, click Save As on the File menu, click the drop-down arrow in the Save as type box, click Project(*.mpp), click Save, and then click OK to overwrite the original file.
  10. Follow steps 1 through 12 in Method 2 to create a new resource pool, and then share the resources from all the sharer projects.

Method 2: Locate and Isolate the Corrupted File

If you need to work with the files before SR-1 can be installed, follow these steps to re-create the resource pool:
  1. Quit all open programs.
  2. Start Microsoft Project, close all projects, and then create a new project.
  3. On the File menu, click Save. In the File name box, type a different file name than the original resource pool.
  4. Repeat steps 5 through 12 for each sharer project. When you follow these steps with the corrupted resource record, you may receive one or more of the following symptoms:
    • Duplicate resource records.
    • An application error, Dr. Watson error, or Invalid Page Fault error.
    • A work resource that has no Base Calendar, and whose Working Time tab is unavailable in Resource Information.
  5. On the File menu, click Open, select the sharer project, and then click Open.
  6. On the Tools menu, point to Resources, and then click Share Resources.
  7. Click Use resources, point to the arrow in the From box, click the new resource pool, and then click OK.
  8. On the View menu, click Resource Sheet, and then review the resources.
  9. On the Window menu, click the resource pool, and then repeat step 8 with the resource pool. If the resources have a problem, and/or you receive an error message, skip steps 10 through 12.
  10. On the File menu, click Save.
  11. On the Window menu, click the sharer project.
  12. On the File menu, click Save. On the File menu, click Close.
  13. If you are able to identify the project that contains the corrupted resource record, follow the preceding steps to create a new resource pool file, and then add all of the non-corrupted sharer projects.
You can work with the corrupted project in stand-alone mode until SR-1 has been installed. At that time, follow the steps in Method 1 to remove the corrupted file, and then connect the file to the resource pool.

NOTE: By saving to MPD format in pre-SR1 Microsoft Project, you may not permanently fix the corrupted record. Upgrade to SR-1 before you follow the steps in Method 1.
