OFFXP: Smart Tag Indicators Do Not Appear or Work as Expected in Your Document (305511)

SYMPTOMS

When you turn on smart tags in any of the Microsoft Office XP programs listed at the beginning of this article, the smart tag indicators may not appear or work as expected in your document.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • You are using a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer.

    -and-
  • You log on by using a user account (not by using the Windows 2000 built-in Administrator account).
This behavior can occur even when your user account is a member of the Administrators group. However, if you log on by using the Administrator account, you are able to view and use smart tags as expected in your document.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the computer as Administrator.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  4. Locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  6. Click Yes in response to the Are you sure you want to delete this key? message.
  7. Locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office

  8. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to delete the registry key.
  9. On the Registry menu, click Exit to quit the Registry Editor.
  1. Run Office XP Setup in Maintenance Mode to Reinstall the Office XP Program (or Programs)

  2. Quit all Microsoft Office programs.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Office XP or the Office XP program listed at the beginning of this article that you want to reinstall, and then click Change.
  5. Click Repair Office - Restore your Microsoft Office XP installation to its original state, and then click Next.
  6. Click Reinstall Office, and then click Install.

The actions are made available with a Smart Tag Actions button that is displayed next to the recognized data in your document. Click the button to display the available actions, and then select the action that you want.
