OFF2000: Error Message When You Try to Install Office: Internal Error 2263 (305503)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Office 2000 on your computer, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Internal error 2263

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Supplemental Cache Size setting for your computer's CD-ROM player is too large for the Office 2000 CD-ROM.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restart your computer using a clean-boot process, and then change the Supplemental Cache Size setting of your CD-ROM player during the installation of Office 2000. To do this, use either Method 1 or Method 2, as appropriate to your circumstances, and then proceed to Method 3.

Method 1: Microsoft Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE)

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. On the General tab, click Selective startup, click to clear each of the check boxes under Selective startup, and then click OK.
  4. Proceed to Method 3.

Method 2: Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. On the Startup tab, click to select the *StateMgr check box, and then click OK.
  4. When prompted, restart your computer.
  5. Proceed to Method 3.

Method 3: Change the Speed Setting on Your CD-ROM Player and Reinstall Office 2000

  1. On the desktop, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Click the plus sign next to CD-ROM.
  4. Double-click the icon for the CD-ROM drive.
  5. In the CD-ROM Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab.
  6. Click to clear the DMA check box, and then click OK.
  7. Click the Performance tab, and then click File System.
  8. On the CD-ROM tab, drag the Supplemental Cache Size slider to Small.
  9. Click the Troubleshooting tab, click to select each check box except the Disable all 32-bit protected-mode disk drivers check box, and then click OK.NOTE: If you are using Windows Me, do not click to select the Disable System Restore check box.

  10. Restart your computer.
  11. Insert your Office 2000 CD-ROM, and then follow the instructions to install Office 2000.
  12. When the installation process is complete, restart your computer.
  13. Change your Startup and CD-ROM settings back to normal, and then restart your computer.
