The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
This article was previously published under Q305499 SYMPTOMS
When you install VERITAS Software Backup Exec for Windows, version 8.0 or 8.5, and then try to restart the computer, you may receive a STOP 0x50 error message similar to the following:
Stop 0x00000050 (0xe135a000, 0x00000001, 0x80424f6d, 0x00000001)
This happens on an IBM Netfinity server that runs Windows 2000 and that has an IBM ServeRAID 4M or 4L controller.
You may encounter the same STOP error if you try to start the computer in Safe mode.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you are using version 4.30 of the IBM ServeRAID 4M or 4L driver.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, obtain and install the latest version of the IBM ServeRAID 4M/4L driver:
- Go to the following IBM Web site, and download the latest version of the IBM ServeRAID 4M/4L driver to a floppy disk:
- Restart your computer to the Windows 2000 Recovery Console:
- Start the computer by using the Windows 2000 Setup disks or the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
- At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press R to repair, and then press C to start the Recovery Console.
- Enter the number for the appropriate Windows 2000 installation, and then type the Administrator account password.
- In the Recovery Console, rename the following files:
- Winnt\System32\Drivers\Nfrd960.sys
- Winnt\System32\Drivers\Nfrdperf.sys
- Winnt\System32\Drivers\Twintail.sys
- Winnt\System32\Nfrdci.dll
- Copy the updated versions of these files from the \Windows 2000\4M_4L folder on the floppy disk to their respective locations.
- Restart the computer.
MORE INFORMATION
The procedure that is outlined in the Resolution section of this article updates the driver from version 4.30 to the latest version. However, the driver properties in Device Manager still show the earlier version because the procedure does not update the associated keys in the Windows 2000 registry. It is recommended that you reinstall the latest version of the IBM ServeRAID driver by running its regular installation program after you are able to restart the computer to Windows 2000.
NOTE: Controller firmware and BIOS updates are also available. You may want to upgrade the drivers for these components.
