WD2000: Cross-Reference to Footnote Displays Incorrect Number (305386)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q305386 SYMPTOMS
When you use cross-references to footnotes that are renumbered for each page, when you open the document, the cross-reference may revert to the footnote number for the entire document, rather than the footnote number that coincides with the particular page that contains the footnote.
CAUSE
Microsoft Word updates all cross-references before footnotes are updated. As a result, cross-references that refer to a particular footnote on a page initially refer to the position number of the footnote in the document, rather than the specific number for that particular page.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.
Turn Off Background Saving and Hidden Text
Before you save your document, turn off the background saving and hidden text options. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Save tab, and then click to clear the Allow background saves check box.
- Click the View tab, and then click to clear the Hidden text check box.
- Click to clear the All check box.
Manually Update the Fields
To manually update the fields, press F9. Or, on the File menu, click Print Preview to preview and update the fields.
Have Word Update Your Field Codes
You can also have Microsoft Word update your field codes when you print your document. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Print tab. Under Printing options, select the Update fields check box.
This method also results in the correct footnote field updates.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
